Spotlight on Gareth Clarke Landscaping

What do you do?

We provide a wide range of horticultural services and minor civils to both domestic and commercial clients.  Our core business covers the north of England but has taken us over the last twelve months to North West Scotland, Devon, South Wales and the Midlands.

Why do you do what you do?

It is all we have done since leaving school, me in 1985 and Richard in 1997. Over the years we have expanded not only the business but our knowledge. The beauty of this trade is things are continually changing and evolving and you have to keep up with it.

How did you get into your field?

I needed to get out of education for a while, A levels and degrees weren’t my thing and I had been working in people's gardens for a couple of years by then. I soon realised that I needed to learn more and was back in education studying horticulture within eighteen months.

What drives you?

Sitting back and looking at the business, the staff and knowing it is something we have built and that we can take it forward. That and the holiday entitlement I negotiated for myself!

What's your greatest success story?

Client satisfaction rates, year on year growth, particularly through the past economic crisis, and knowing what a great platform we have to provide a bright future for both ourselves and our staff.

What's the most important lesson you've learned whilst building your business?

Be honest to customers, staff and suppliers. Without any one of them the wheels fall off. Stand your ground and back yourself and your decisions. If it goes wrong after that you have no one else to blame.
