Spotlight on Verner Wheelock Associates

Verner Wheelock Associates (VWA) is an award-winning consultancy providing expert training to the food industry. Located in the picturesque grounds of Broughton Hall in the Yorkshire Dales, VWA offers courses at all levels in Food Safety, Nutrition, HACCP and Auditing both classroom based and online. It is also the only company in the UK offering a specialist course in savoury flavour formulation, which attracts delegates from around the globe.

The company was founded in 1990 by leading expert in nutrition and health, Dr Verner Wheelock.  A former professor at Bradford University, he established the Food Policy Research Unit which pioneered research on recommendations on healthy eating for the food and agriculture industries.

VWA continues to be a family-run business, with Verner’s daughter, Alison, as the current Managing Director. The company trains delegates from many of the UK’s largest food manufacturing companies, as well as smaller concerns, and delegates regularly achieve outstanding results in examinations. VWA has been based on the Broughton Estate for over 15 years, where they have offices and a training room that accommodates up to 10 delegates.

Fast facts

  • They employ 7 people with a network of freelance trainers around the country
  • They have around 300 regular clients – ranging from cafés and restaurant, to household names including Heinz, Warburtons and Nestle
  • Tetley and Mabel, the VWA office dogs, have developed an active interest in the food industry themselves and will be the first to ‘quality control’ any Utopia bacon butties that might be on offer (or in Mabel’s case, even those that are NOT on offer!).
